Before becoming a patient with SSM Rehabilitation Hospital, your doctor refers you for rehabilitation.
A pre-admission specialist then reviews your medical and therapy needs, and admits
you based on your potential to benefit from our rehabilitation program. Criteria
for admission include such factors as having an appropriate rehabilitation-related
diagnosis, having the potential to improve functional capacities, being medically
stable, possessing the motivation to actively participate, and being able to tolerate
daily therapy sessions.
Even though you are in the hospital, being a patient on the rehabilitation hospital
is very different from other hospital stays. In the beginning, your nurses may provide
a lot of care. But since the goal is to help you regain as much ability as possible
and prepare you for your return home or to your community, our role isn’t to do
things for you, but instead teach you to do them for yourself.
Your rehabilitation will be directed by a team of experts in a variety of medical
and rehabilitation specialties who share a specific focus on treating your condition
or diagnosis. Our rehabilitation teams are organized around specific rehabilitation diagnoses,
which means they have the experience and expertise to best help you in your rehabilitation.
A Typical Day in Rehabilitation
Since you are here for intensive rehabilitation, most of your day will be spent
in therapy. Comprehensive therapy services are provided for a minimum of three hours
per day and include at least two therapy disciplines. Your typical day will follow
this general schedule:
7:00-8:30 a.m.: wake up, morning care, breakfast (in the dining room or your room)
Your occupational therapist may begin your initial assessment during morning care
or at the beginning of therapy.
8:30-11:30 a.m.: morning therapy (Many patients are scheduled for physical, occupational
and speech therapy. Each therapy session lasts one-half to one hour.)
11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: lunch and rest period
1:00-4:30 p.m.: afternoon therapy
4:30-6:00 p.m.: dinner and rest period
6:00-8:00 p.m.: visitors, activities
The injury or illness that brought you to rehabilitation may require you to strengthen muscles,
improve mobility, or relearn activities for daily living. Our therapy gyms and treatment
rooms are specially designed to maximize your rehabilitation potential.
