The patient’s family is one of the most important members of the SSM Rehabilitation Hospital Brain
Injury Team.
The family is the patient’s source of familiarity. The family can provide the rest
of the team information about the patient’s interest, personality, and learning
style. The familiar faces provide ongoing reassurance and motivation to keep the
patient active in rehabilitation. Thus, family support and involvement is vital
to the rehabilitation process and outcome. Families are invited to participate in
several areas:
- Complete a background information sheet to assist the rehabilitation team in knowing more
about your family member and setting appropriate goals.
- Contact your case manager, a key person in coordinating your family member’s rehabilitation
program.
- Attend a family training, which allows you opportunities to see how the therapists
are working with your family member during therapies, and receive instruction on
how you can help, too. Please schedule a family training session with your case
manager.
- Participate in counseling provided by the neuropsychologist to discuss overall rehabilitation
goals, progress, and the future.
- Participate in therapeutic pass. With permission of the doctor, the patient may
be allowed to leave the hospital for a specified time to often return home. Therapeutic
passes are for the day only, not overnight. This provides helpful information for
the patient/family in making the transition to hospital or home.
Family members are encouraged to contact their case manager for ongoing involvement
and support during the rehabilitation process.
