Patients are scheduled for at least three hours of therapy each day, typically a
combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Joint
treatment sessions may be done to provide a team approach to stimulation. Family
members and friends are strongly encouraged to participate in therapy to learn the
patient’s abilities and limits so they can help promote the patient’s independence
in the community.
Community Re-Integration
Community Re-Integration, which incorporates community outings, is a program that
may be offered as part of the rehabilitation process. The purpose of these outings
is:
- To provide information and educate the patient and family in regard to community
resources. This includes awareness of architectural barriers, transportation, and
rights of the disabled.
- To assist the patient in developing skills for dealing with others in the community.
- To allow patients the opportunity to practice the skills learned in the hospital
prior to discharge.
- To allow the treatment team to check the patient’s problem areas and functional
use of the skills learned in therapy.
Weather allowing, outings are planned during therapy time. These outings are
goal-oriented and therapists work one-on-one with the patients during the outing.
