Occupational Therapy 

Occupational Therapy is the application of purposeful, goal-oriented activity in the evaluation and treatment of persons whose function is impaired by physical illness or injury, emotional disorder, congenital or developmental disability, or the aging process, in order to achieve optimum functioning to prevent disability and to maintain health.

Specific occupational therapy services at SSM Physical Therapy include, but are not limited to:

• education and training in activities of daily living
• the design, fabrication and application of splints
• guidance in the selection and use of adaptive equipment
• therapeutic activities to enhance functional performance

Goals include:

• increase upper extremity ROM (range of motion) and strength
• teach compensatory techniques for sensory impairment
• improve fine and gross motor coordination of upper extremities
• increase endurance
• improve balance
• teach compensatory techniques for perceptual visual and cognitive deficits
• improve manual communication skills (writing, typing, use of computer, phone)
• increase self-care function (dressing, feeding, bathing, grooming)
• teach work simplification, energy conservation and joint protection techniques
• splint construction and/or application to prevent deformity and/or increase function
• evaluate positioning needs
• develop devices to enhance function
• prevent deformity
• preserve skin integrity
