Speech therapy is concerned with the establishment of
optimal modes of all types of communication, as well as safety with swallowing function.
A speech-language pathologist, also referred to as a "speech
therapist" provides individual and/or group treatment to individuals with communication
and/or swallowing difficulties. These difficulties may arise from a variety of diagnoses,
including traumatic brain injury, stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis,
and other neurologic impairments.
Communication impairments include aphasia (a language
impairment), cognitive-communication impairment, dysarthria (a speech impairment),
voice impairments, and fluency disorders.
