Do you ever feel an unusual onset of dizziness with certain
movements? You may have vertigo, a balance problem.
What does the word "dizzy" mean to
you?
When you think of being dizzy, do you flash back to that feeling of being on
a merry-go-round or tilt-a-whirl? That false sensation of movement is defined as
vertigo. Vertigo is a sign of an underlying balance system problem. The area of
your balance system that is often damaged is your vestibular system. Attacks of
vertigo can occur with simple changes in position such as lying down, quickly turning,
looking up into a cabinet, or looking down into a drawer. Many times the attack
will only last a few minutes, but occur frequently. Other times a person may feel
dizzy all of the time, even to the point of feeling dizzy when lying still.
What can be done?
In recent times vertigo symptoms have been treated with medication and, in
severe cases, surgery. Vestibular Rehabilitationilitation is another effective therapy that
is physical therapy based. Vestibular Rehabilitationilitation is a therapeutic approach to
management of vertigo symptoms. Vestibular Rehabilitation consists of exercises specifically
designed to retrain your balance system. Each program is tailored to meet the specific
needs of the patient. Therapy continues until satisfactory reduction of the symptoms
is achieved. Often clients are completely free of symptoms at the completion of
the therapeutic program.
